Environment

Ross Overby’s Vision

The environment remains a contentious political issue. The Republican stance is that our environmental regulations choke our economy. I could not disagree more.  In fact,  I find this to be an odd claim given that the EPA has been around for about 36 years and in that time our economy has grown over 1,100 percent.

It is our moral duty to be good stewards of the environement. The world and its wonders are not our creation, they are gifts for us to respect, cherish, and preserve. The reality is that the U.S has good environmental policy that should not be rolled back. Good stewardship of the environment is not only wise it pays through reduced waste.  The Republican Party and the incumbent Sue Myrick are asleep when it comes to looking at the future of the environment.

 Moving Toward Energy Independence

I want our country to invest in research into alternative fuels, alternative transport technology, energy storage for electric cars, resource conservation and reuse, and sustainable development. We need to lead international talks on resource conservation and sustainable development.

It is clear that our future will be strong only if we reduce our dependence on oil by diversifying our energy sources.  We need to invest in research into solar and wind power applied at the point of use like your home, office, or factory. We need research into converting farm wastes into energy. We need to break our 1950’s vision of massive central power plants and visualize diversified energy sources applied locally, but on a large scale.

The World Affects Us Here At Home

The environment has become a global issue. The U.S has a population of about three hundred million people. Even with our good environmental controls we emit over 35 percent of the carbon dioxide and we consume a disproportionate share of the global resources. What is going to happen as three billon people in China, India, and other nations grow economically? Even if the rest of the world established environmental policies that are as good as ours (and they have not), there will be extraordinary pressure on the atmosphere, rivers, and coastal areas. The actions of three billion people will affect us. If we stay the course the world will see over fishing of oceans, dying habitats, increased air pollution, and stress on the land and forest resources. We are world leaders – let’s lead!
